A Project of Purpose and Connection
Designed for Elementary Cycle 3 and Secondary Cycle 1 language learners, Building Bridges with Blocks invites students to co-create, share and respond to Scratch projects — all while using their second language. Through this process, participants build foundational digital skills alongside language proficiency and intercultural understanding.
The project reflects broader educational goals in Québec and Canada around multicultural engagement and digital literacy. By integrating coding into language classes, educators are helping students practice meaningful communication — not only constructing sentences in a second language, but also expressing ideas creatively through animation, games, and interactive stories.
How the Project Works
Typically structured over a period of approximately six weeks, the project unfolds in stages:
- Week 1: Teacher preparation and training
- Week 2: Students create their first Scratch project — usually an “All About Me” piece in their second language
- Weeks 3–5: Classes view and comment on each other’s projects, supplying respectful, constructive feedback
- Week 6: Sharing of final projects and reflection on the collaboration experience
Throughout the project, students learn not only technical and linguistic skills, but also digital citizenship, giving and receiving feedback, and reflective communication — competencies increasingly essential in a globally connected world.
Supporting Educators and Learners
Building Bridges with Blocks isn’t a plug-and-play initiative on its own: it’s backed by ongoing pedagogical support. Teachers can access guidance from RÉCIT consultants both online and in person to help plan and facilitate the collaboration. This support helps align the project with curriculum goals in both language and technology integration.
In addition to the classroom activities, the project is supported by professional learning opportunities. For example, LEARN’s Digital Competency in Action calendar includes a hands-on workshop titled Building Bridges with Blocks: Promouvoir les langues avec Scratch, where educators explore how to use Scratch to foster communication, creativity, and digital citizenship in their classrooms.
Why This Matters for Educators
Language learning and digital skills are both priorities in today’s K-12 landscape. Initiatives like Building Bridges with Blocks illustrate a multi-layered approach: students gain confidence in a second language, deepen their computational thinking, and broaden their ability to interact respectfully with peers from different linguistic backgrounds.
For educators seeking to integrate technology meaningfully, the project offers a dynamic model: one that supports curriculum across subject areas, engages students in creative problem-solving, and reinforces the value of collaboration across communities.
As more schools in Québec and beyond look to blend language learning with digital competency, Building Bridges with Blocks offers a replicable and enriching framework that leverages free tools and shared classroom experiences to foster both skills and connections among young learners. The spring session is starting during the week of March 9th, 2026. Register your class here!
