Rethinking school programs around interdisciplinary projects and allowing learners to progress at their own pace is not simply futuristic rhetoric. Across Canada, the United States, and Europe, several schools and educational networks have embraced this approach through inspiring models that offer concrete ways to reimagine schooling.
Are You Familiar With Them?
- Acton Academy (founded in Texas and now operating more than 300 micro-schools worldwide): serves students from elementary through secondary school. Learning is guided through philosophical discussions, collaborative projects, and narrative-driven quests. Teachers act as guides who encourage reflection rather than simply providing answers. Students progress at their own pace within multi-age groups and develop competencies through public exhibitions of their work.
- Revel Academy (Ottawa, Canada): draws inspiration from Acton Academy while placing a strong emphasis on learner autonomy. Students set daily SMART goals, engage in long-term narrative-driven projects, and regularly present their work to the community. Progress is monitored through mastery badges and learning portfolios. The school also integrates peer collaboration, philosophical dialogue, social-emotional learning, as well as yoga and mindfulness practices into everyday learning experiences.
- Sora Schools (Atlanta, United States): students work toward mastering more than 50 competency frameworks over four years. Learning is interdisciplinary, project-based, and competency-driven. Rather than attending separate classes in mathematics, history, science, and language arts, students tackle challenges that integrate multiple areas of study simultaneously.
- Iowa BIG (Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States) and the Big Picture Learning Network: students earn most of their credits through projects carried out in partnership with local businesses, non-profit organizations, municipalities, and community groups. Assessment focuses on demonstrations of competency, collaboration, real-world problem-solving, and social impact. In this model, learning becomes closely connected to community engagement.
Agora Schools: Learning Without Traditional Structures
Founded in Roermond, the Netherlands, Agora Schools challenge the very foundations of the traditional school model. There are no classrooms, no subjects, no fixed schedules, and no traditional textbooks. Instead, each student builds a personalized learning pathway based on individual interests, personal projects, curiosity-driven inquiry, and self-defined goals.
Rather than teaching prescribed content, mentors support students aged 12 to 18 throughout their exploratory learning journeys. They help learners formulate questions, find resources, collaborate with others, and share their discoveries. School becomes a laboratory of experiences where curiosity, creativity, responsibility, and initiative replace simple compliance with the curriculum.
The model is centred on one core principle: meaningful, self-directed learning. Each week, students define their own priorities, whether they are building a model, writing a novel, exploring quantum physics, or organizing an exhibition. Rather than simply transmitting knowledge, mentors support an ongoing process of inquiry and discovery.
Grounded in trust and intrinsic motivation, this approach encourages engagement, perseverance, autonomy, and active participation. Today, the Agora model has also expanded to Belgium and Poland.
Alpha School
Alpha School, based in Texas, offers a glimpse of what a truly hybrid learning model supported by technology and artificial intelligence can look like. At this private school, students spend part of their day strengthening foundational knowledge through adaptive platforms that adjust content based on their progress. This first phase, lasting approximately two hours each day, allows learners to progress at their own pace while continuously monitoring their development.
In the afternoon, the focus shifts entirely. Students dedicate their time to collaborative, hands-on projects centered on creativity, communication, emotional management, nature, and entrepreneurship. Teachers then act as mentors, guiding students through collective challenges.
The model aims to combine efficiency with humanity, performance with personal growth, and technology with meaningful relationships. AI is not used to replace teachers, but rather to free up more time for what matters most: developing human competencies.
What These Schools Have in Common
Despite their different contexts, these schools share several characteristics that distinguish them from traditional models:
- they are competency-based rather than time-based;
- they do not group students strictly by age;
- they promote transdisciplinary learning;
- they emphasize real-world impact through internships, volunteering, and community projects;
- they place equal, or even greater, importance on transferable competencies such as autonomy, empathy, leadership, and communication alongside academic competencies.
Most of these models currently focus on elementary and secondary education, but they could easily be adapted to vocational training, colleges, universities, and continuing education.
In these contexts, the goal is no longer simply to “pass” a course in order to accumulate credits, but to take the time to develop meaningful competencies through a variety of experiences and to demonstrate them clearly through applied projects, collaborative research, internships, mentoring, or workplace learning. What matters is not time spent, but tangible proof of mastery of essential competencies.
These schools are not yet the norm. They also raise important questions about accessibility, equity, official recognition, teacher preparation, and learner support. Yet they make one fundamental shift tangible: the transformation of school from a system of knowledge transmission into a space for development, exploration, and meaningful learning.
