Legal Literacy in the Classroom: “Are You Old Enough?” Workshop Helps Students Understand Rights and Responsibilities

The workshop is designed for Elementary Cycle 3 and Secondary Cycle 1 learners (approximately Grades 5–8) and focuses on how a young person gradually gains legal rights and responsibilities as they approach adulthood. Although the age of majority in Québec is 18, the workshop emphasizes that different freedoms and responsibilities accrue at different ages and stages, helping students understand what they can and should do as they mature within society.

Connecting Legal Concepts to Everyday Student Life

The Are You Old Enough? workshop is rooted in the idea that legal literacy is a key part of citizenship education. As students spend much of their day in structured environments like schools, knowing their rights — and the responsibilities that accompany them — supports both safety and agency in their daily lives.

Participating educators will receive a recording of the virtual sessions, allowing them to revisit the content or share it with classes who may not be able to attend live. The workshop spans approximately six class periods delivered via Zoom, making it adaptable to school scheduling needs.

In addition to exploring legal milestones tied to age, the experience encourages discussion and critical thinking about autonomy and decision-making — key components of the Culture and Citizenship in Québec (CCQ) curriculum.

The Are You Old Enough? series is supported by an accompanying teaching toolkit, including a PowerPoint presentation with detailed instructional notes and a student guide with classroom activities. These resources help teachers expand the learning experience, provide context for legal concepts, and facilitate reflection and application.
