Here’s more.

The transition from high school to CEGEP marks a significant step in a student’s academic journey. It can be a time of excitement, anticipation, but also uncertainty and potential challenges. Recognizing the significance of guiding students during this transition, the LEARN Quebec Provincial Resources Team recently organized a webinar to empower Secondary 4 and 5 students with the necessary knowledge and resources to succeed in CEGEP. Held on February 12th, the webinar provided invaluable insights into CEGEP life, practical strategies for success, and a surge of self-assurance for the upcoming adventure.

A Panel of Experts Guides the Way

The webinar featured a dynamic panel of experts, including Shirley Jobson, a Psychosocial Counsellor at CEGEP Champlain (St. Lawrence), Suzanne Laporte, a Guidance Counsellor at the English Montreal School Board, and two current CEGEP students, Arielle and Terry. This diverse panel brought a wide range of perspectives to the table, discussing both the academic and social aspects of life at CEGEP. The session, which was recorded for later viewing by students and classes who were unable to attend live, was structured to address pre-submitted questions and provide a comprehensive exploration of key topics.  Ajay Modi, Project Coordinator with LEARN, led the question-and-answer segment.

Prioritizing Mental Well-being

One of the main topics discussed in the webinar was the importance of mental health. Shirley emphasized the idea of balance, introducing the “Wellness Wheel” as a tool for students to evaluate their current state in various areas of their lives, including mental, social, recreational, financial, career, spiritual, home, and physical well-being. She encouraged students to revisit this assessment when they start CEGEP, recognizing that transitions often require a reevaluation of priorities and a renewed focus on maintaining balance. This proactive approach to mental health highlights the webinar’s commitment to promoting students’ overall well-being.

Navigating Program Choices

Choosing the right program is an important decision, and Suzanne offered practical advice on how to navigate this process. She accentuated the importance of research, open houses, and consulting with guidance counsellors to align interests, values, and strengths with potential career paths and programs. Suzanne suggested that students without access to guidance counsellors, consider exploring CEGEP websites, taking online questionnaires, and directly contacting admissions offices.

Firsthand Insights from Current Students

The current CEGEP students, Arielle and Terry, shared their firsthand experiences, shedding light on the key differences between high school and CEGEP. They touched upon the more flexible academic structure, the increased responsibility for managing time and assignments, and the accelerated pace of learning. Arielle emphasized the importance of avoiding procrastination, given the rapid pace of the 15-week semesters. Terry shared his personal journey of finding his academic path, demonstrating that it’s okay to explore different options and change programs, if necessary. Suzanne reinforced this point, explaining the process of changing programs with the help of an academic advisor.

Addressing the Anxiety of Transition

The webinar also addressed the common anxieties that arrive when transitioning to CEGEP. Shirley provided a helpful “stress recipe,” outlining four key ingredients that contribute to stress levels: sense of control, newness, unpredictability, and threat to the ego or self-esteem. By understanding these factors, students can better manage their stress and develop coping mechanisms. Additionally, Shirley highlighted the significance of emotional intelligence, encouraging students to reflect on their strengths and values as a foundation for success.  She shared a list of personal strengths and core values to help guide students in their self-reflections.

Leveraging Available Resources

An essential part of the webinar focused on the resources available to students in CEGEP. Suzanne described that CEGEPs are like “little cities” with a wealth of support systems, including psychosocial counsellors, academic advisors, help centres, libraries, and accessibility services. Arielle shared her personal experience of using academic advisors and tutors, stressing the value of seeking help when necessary. Terry explained how he managed his time effectively with a more flexible schedule, underlining the importance of self-discipline.

Key Takeaways

The webinar also addressed important topics, including how to build friendships, manage overwhelming coursework, and access psychological resources. The panellists offered practical advice and reassurance, emphasizing that feeling overwhelmed is normal, and that help is always available. Suzanne brought up useful platforms like Pygma.ca and SRAM, while Arielle shared that many students don’t take advantage of the resources available to them. She encouraged students not to hesitate to ask for help.

A Bridge to Success

The LEARN Quebec Provincial Resources Team offers professional development through its Community Learning Centres (CLC).  This webinar served as a valuable bridge between high school and CEGEP, equipping students with the knowledge, resources, and confidence needed for success. By addressing common concerns, offering practical strategies, and outlining available support systems, the webinar empowered students to approach this new chapter with excitement and readiness.
