Canada’s 16th “Schools of the Future Challenge” for Sustainable Development

Canadian K-12 educators have an great opportunity to engage students in sustainability through innovation. MindShare Learning, in partnership with Dell Technologies, has launched the 16th annual Schools of the Future [Student Innovation] Challenge. This year’s theme is “Empowering Sustainable Smart Communities through UN SDGoals”.

Canadian K-12 educators have an great opportunity to engage students in sustainability through innovation. MindShare Learning, in partnership with Dell Technologies, has launched the 16th annual Schools of the Future [Student Innovation] Challenge. This year’s theme is “Empowering Sustainable Smart Communities through UN SDGoals”.

The challenge invites students and teachers from publicly funded schools across Canada to create a 2-3 minute video that showcases their solutions to community-based problems, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The initiative is supported by Dell Technologies among other sponsors and highlights the integration of technology in promoting environmental sustainability.

Robert Martellacci, president and founder of MindShare Learning, commented on the challenge’s goals, saying, “By harnessing the creative problem-solving energies of our students and the power of innovative technologies, we are paving the way towards a sustainable future. This challenge not only reflects our commitment to education and the environment but also empowers young minds to think globally and act locally.”

The competition will accept submissions until midnight on Friday, May 17, 2024, with the winners to be announced in the June edition of the MindShare Learning Report. Prizes for the challenge include over $50,000 in advanced technology, aiming to foster digital transformation and enhance learning environments in schools.

Reflecting on her success in last year’s challenge, Melissa Dent from Rosedale said, “We at Rosedale are exceptionally proud of our Girls Who Game initiative and their efforts in adopting the global sustainability goals to foster citywide changes through Minecraft. Our students demonstrate the hope and potential of their generation as key drivers of the transformative changes demanded in the 21st century.”
