That’s the question a team of education researchers explored as they assessed AI’s ability to simulate professional teaching competencies, using Quebec’s official competency framework for teachers as a benchmark. The result? Teaching remains largely resistant to automation.

An AI-powered tool, developed by Quebec’s Ministry of Education and GRICS, is helping school teams identify students at risk of dropping out—well before warning signs appear. Already deployed in dozens of School Service Centres, the tool blends human expertise with predictive analytics to support timely, targeted interventions.
All 18 schools from Central Quebec School Board have access to EngagED Learning magazine, the English-language edition of École branchée’s professional publication. Pedagogical Consultant Yannik Blier was interviewed to shed light on the benefits such a subscription offers to teaching staff.
“ChatGPT murdered my evaluation,” says Noémie Verhoef, a Cégep philosophy teacher who turned a plagiarism crisis into an opportunity to rethink assessment. Instead of banning AI, she built a new model of academic integrity—one rooted in pedagogy, responsibility, and student engagement. Her results? Less cheating, more learning, and stronger relationships.
